I recently saw the film Battle LA (which was awesome!) and it made me think about the non-Avatar films that still have amazing makeup, but aren’t recognized for it. I feel like Battle LA is one of these films. Yes, there are the obvious cuts and bruises and lost limbs (GRAPHIC image below), but if you asked someone about this film, I would guess they’d talk about the visual effects and explosions, before they mentioned the makeup.
Well I’m here to speak on behalf of the makeup team!
One of the things that viewers don’t realize when watching a film is that it takes a long time to create a film like this. Something that takes a matter of minutes in the film, could take days to shoot or it could be shot in stages, weeks apart. The makeup artist needs to be completely on their game in order for it all to look seamless in the finished result.
When I watch a film (because I’m crazy!) I like to pay attention and notice these things on purpose. I’ll see a scratch over an eyebrow jump from right over top to way up high or a bleeding cut change from being dried blood to flowing. It’s not even conscious anymore, my eye just looks for these things.
All of this is to say that Battle LA didnt have any of these glaring mistakes and the makeup progression, or “break down” was really well done, or in other words, believable.

The film takes place over the course of 24 hours so the characters have to go from clean to end-of-the-world-beat-up soldiers. Again, keep in mind this wasn’t made in 24 hours, it just has to look like 24 hours, which means the makeup team had to first plot out how each character was going to develop through the film and then execute throughout filming, sometimes jumping back and forth in the storyline.

This film was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it., both for the makeup and the super-cool alien butt-kicking! If you haven’t seen it already – go!
